Most Recent. Very good. LittleLaroo Lancashire contributions. Until now that is. A few weeks ago we decided to brave the journey first by train, then by bus and finally by foot. Not even a hint of what the castle used to look like or how it was run.
It makes it all very hard to distinguish one room from another. The lack of information is also appalling. Very poor! What makes these information plaques all the more galling is that someone has clearly gone to the trouble to make a few pictures to go along with some of the text.
The worst thing bout Skipton Castle though it the price. The gift shop is an overpriced rip off and I would advise you to bring your own drinks as the cost at Skipton is ridiculous. Over all you get the impression that nobody in charge of the place can actually be bothered and are content to rake in the shiny doubloons. On arrival in Skipton we were directed by the signposts to the short stay carpark, which, with hindsight, should have warned us. When buying our tickets, we were not warned that the castle might be unsuitable for the elderly, and think we should have been.
It consists of empty stone rooms connected by dimly lit, slippery stone spiral staircases, information is given by small plaques on the wall but there are no furnishings or objects which you might expect in an ancient castle. The dungeon, reached by one of the spiral staircases, is simply a stone room without windows, totally devoid of any item of interest apart from a plaque claiming the prisoners were well fed.. In the event, we spent less than an hour inside, there was little to explore outside, and we came away feeling completely ripped off.
I can only advise any visitors to the area to go to see Cliffe Castle museum in Keighley, completely free and eminently more interesting. The Happy Wanderer Skipton 26 contributions.
