The absolute worst father in Dragon Ball Z has got to be King Cold, a man willing to replace his favorite son with his murderer in a heartbeat. Cooler acknowledges in the movie Cooler's Revenge that King Cold favored Frieza over him, indicating that somehow this treatment of his son was actually positive compared to how Cold treated Cooler. This begs the question: why?
Despite Frieza being by all accounts weaker than Cooler -- who, after all, achieved a fifth form long before Frieza uncovered his Golden Form -- King Cold preferred his younger son.
What qualities did Cooler possess that let him fall out of Cold's favor? Due to Cooler's Revenge 's complicated place in Dragon Ball Z canon , it's hard to determine how much of what Cooler said should be taken into consideration. The film should take place immediately after the Frieza Saga but before King Cold's arrival on Earth, due in part to Gohan's hairstyle and Cooler believing that Goku killed Frieza rather than Frieza being rebuilt by his father and slain by Trunks.
There are obvious continuity issues with that placement Goku wasn't on Earth at the time , but this establishes that Cold lost both of his sons in quick succession.
However, King Cold goes out of his way to rebuild Frieza while allowing Cooler to return as Metal Cooler on his own through some Lovecraftian machines. Cold also helps Frieza get revenge on Earth, while offering Cooler little to no help -- though, bizarrely, Cooler came far closer to killing Goku and friends than his brother and father did. Yet when King Cold retired from his planet trade organization -- shown in Dragon Ball Super: Broly -- he announced his younger son Frieza as his successor and gave him the keys, rather than Cooler.
One possible reason why King Cold might've preferred Frieza is that he seemed to accomplish more than Cooler, even though the older sibling proves stronger during their lifetimes. Cooler demonstrates extreme power, even possessing one more transformation than the fearsome Frieza, but he, too, falls in battle against the golden-haired Super Saiyan Goku. Here, his base form overpowers Super Saiyan Goku, and only after Super Saiyan Vegeta shows up does Cooler transform, still able to fight, which is a major departure from how easily he is handled in the movie.
Frieza was exceptionally resilient. He eventually lost his tail, cut himself in half due to his own hubris, and then took a face-melting ki blast and a planet exploding at point blank, yet still somehow survived, and was soon rebuilt into a cyborg by his father. Yeah, Frieza may have been maimed and had a planet blow up in his face, but Cooler was literally thrown into the sun, with a fully-powered planet busting ki blast crushing him the entire time.
Take that, little brother. While the series is infamous for its various missteps regarding plot and character choices, it did end up with some interesting concepts for villains and set pieces. Thankfully, Cooler got to have a piece of that pie, no matter how bitter the icing was.
During the Super 17 Saga, Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu open a portal to Hell in order to complete their nefarious plots involving the fusing of both Android 17s into one nightmarish behemoth. Because of the portal opening, Cooler, along with countless other villains, was able to make a brief but awesome appearance, despite it being no more than an Easter egg. The two brothers were more than happy to unite forces against their murderers. Perhaps the fact that their deaths were at the hands of Saiyans was what allowed them to quickly toss aside their differences and any other pent-up issues they had bubbling inside them in order to effectively fight.
However, regardless of the reason, Cooler proved that he could work as a team with Frieza, despite his murderous thoughts. Takeo is known for roles beyond Dragon Ball Z, such as Ceasar Clown in One Piece and roles in Bleach, among others, but his most famous vocal performance is that of the diminutive Frieza. Only now with a much sleeker body.
Another tough fight ensures till it's revealed that Cooler isn't one person but a whole army of himself. Eventually, Goku and Vegeta find out that none of these Coolers are the real one, and that the true Cooler is nothing more than a head that had grafted itself to a metal star, took over it and made robots of himself to carry out his revenge. But revealing himself proves to be his undoing and Goku and Vegeta manage to finish him off. Community Showcase More. Follow TV Tropes.
