Which is better jungfrau or schilthorn

I'd skip the eating until you are on the way down. Don't skip it just wait until you come down from the Jungfrau. After your lunch you will still have time enough to check out Wengen on your way back to Gimmelwald.

I saw it as an alternaive end to the day, not an "and" I would definitely not go up to the Jungfraujoch after doing the rest of the "alternative" itinerary, unless you absolutely want to walk on snow. I prefer Jungfraujoch over Schilthorn. I enjoy being on the snow, but that is my personal liking.

My judgement on the Jungfraujoch may be clouded by the fact that on both of my visits there once in November, once in May the way out onto the glacier was closed, which meant that access to the open air was basically limited to the Sphinx viewing platform and the outside area close to the ice palace.

I find the indoor parts of the Jungfraujoch pretty unpleasant - a mixture of gloomy tunnels and tacks souvenir shops. I'm sure it's a whole different experience if you can get "properly" outside and walk for more than 50 metres on the snow! I prefer the Jungfrau over the Schilthorn! It depends what time of year you are going of course, but in the summer I find the area around the Schilthorn to be a bit barren.

Don't get me wrong, it is of course a wonderful view and the revolving restaurant is novel but I don't find it quite as beautiful as the rest of the area. This might be why Rick Steve prefers Allmendhubel to the Schilthorn, it would be my choice too! I have been to the top of the Jungfrau twice now and loved both trips.

Yes, you travel through a tunnel after Kleine Scheidegg , but the journey passes quickly as the new trains are very comfortable and there are information screens that tell you about the railway and the mountain.

There are two viewing points, one that looks down on the Mannlichen and Grindelwald , and one which looks out onto a beautiful "crevassy" glacier my favourite.

At the top there's a great view down onto the Aletsch glacier , and it's fun to be able to walk a long way on the snow too. There are the huskies too, if that's your sort of thing. You will need a clear weather day to fully appreciate either trip. If you do decide to go to the Jungfrau I would suggest getting the Good Morning ticket which leaves very early and is slightly cheaper, because clouds gather from lunchtime onwards.

Yes, the walk from the Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is stunning, I highly recommend it. I am familiar with Colorado mtns. Skip to main content.
